holiday wine

The holiday season is a prime time to have a few good bottles of wine on hand.

If you don?t need them for your family gatherings or other events that you?re hosting, bottles of wine make an easy grab-and-go contribution for friends? parties or a last-minute gift.

We?ve talked about plenty of ways to get a good deal on wine: buy in bulk,?for example, and look for half-priced wine vouchers?at daily deal sites.

But price is just part of the equation. ?You also want to get the right wine: one that?s good enough to be noted as such by the people drinking it, while cheap enough to serve an entire table of relatives or party of friends,? says Wesley Narron, chief wine ambassador at CityWineTours.com.

As he puts it, ?Your significant other will be impressed. Your auntie will chug-a-lug. And you?ll have some great wine with the ?meal, a happy wallet, and a much better buzz than Nana?s jug wine.?

We asked Narron and other wine experts for their picks, as well as a few specific bottles that come in under the $20 mark:

Beaujolais Nouveau

This French variety is only available during the holiday season ? it?s the first release of this year?s vintage, explains Bob Wilson, the chief executive of Winestyr.com.

?Any brand will work, as this is simple wine that hasn?t been aged,? he says. Most bottles run $9 to $20.?Try one as a gift, or pair with foods early into a holiday meal before heavier wines make an appearance.

Vouvray

At first glance, Narron says, this little-known, ever-so-slightly-sweet white wine from France looks like ?the type of wine your wine-snob brother-in-law will disdain.?

But a Vouvray made #6 on Decanter Magazine?s list of the 100 Greatest Wines ever made, and its cheaper counterparts are a worthy choice for a holiday meal.

He likes the Domain de Vaufuget Vouvray for $10, the Charles Bove? Vouvray for $14, or the Marc Bredif Vouvray for $20.

Sparkling Cider

Hard cider is having its moment as an ?it? drink. But for a place at a holiday table, look to those that are more like wine than beer.

Arthur Hon, wine director at Chicago restaurant Sepia, likes the 2009 Eric Bordelet Poir? ?Authentique? from Normandy, a pear cider that sells for $19.

?It has slight sweetness that would work better at the end of meals, but with savory dishes that include fruit elements will be an eye-opening pairing,? he says.

Pinot Gris

?If you like a white with your Thanksgiving meal, Pinot Gris pairs well with turkey and all its fixings,? Wilson says.

Compared to a Pinot Grigio, which is made from the same grape, the French-style Pinot Gris is fuller-bodied and has more mineral flavors.

His pick: Rocky Hill 2010 Pinot Gris from Sonoma, which sells for $19.

Cava

?When it comes to sparkling wine, Spanish Cava can be one of the more budget-friendly picks,? says sommelier Matthew Carroll of BRABO restaurant and its shop, the Butcher?s Block, in Alexandria, Va.

He likes Castillo Perelada Brut Cava, a non-vintage sparkler that sells for $12. ?It?s a beautiful dry sparkler that will work just as beautifully with turkey as it will with cranberry sauce, stuffing and sweet potatoes,? Carroll says.

Rioja

Rioja ?has the same strawberry-cherry?aromas of Pinot Noir, and some of the floral characteristics of Chianti, ?minus the smokiness or earthiness,? Narron says.

Prices rise the longer the wine has been barrel-aged. Look for a bottle with ?Crianza? or ?Reserva? in the name. ??Tinto? varieties have little aging and can be too harsh, while a ?Gran Reserva? isn?t enough of a flavor upgrade to justify the cost,? he says.

Two picks: the ?Marques de Caceres Crianza and the Lan Crianza, both $14.

The Statesmen, who are ranked No. 25 in the College Squash Association preseason rankings, will start the weekend taking on No. 5 Rochester at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 17.? Hobart will square off with No. 11 St. Lawrence at 4:30 p.m. to round out Day 1. On Sunday, Nov. 18, the Statesmen will take on the Brewers at 9 a.m., and then face Bard at 11 a.m.

Hobart is off to a 2-3 start this season. The Statesmen opened the year with a 9-0 sweep of Ithaca. Hobart then traveled to Annapolis, Md., to take part in the Navy Round Robin. The Statesmen picked up a 5-4 win over No. 29 Georgetown, but dropped matches to No. 13 Navy, No. 28 Johns Hopkins and No. 16 George Washington.

First-years Peter Sammis and Michael Woods lead the Statesmen with three wins each. Sammis has posted a 3-2 record at No. 7, while Woods is 2-2 at No. 8 and 1-0 at No. 9. Sophomore McGee O'Neil has played all five matches at the No. 1 spot, logging a 2-3 record.
?
In 2011, Hobart went 2-2 in the Liberty League Championship. The Statesmen topped Bard 9-0 and defeated Vassar 8-1, but fell to St. Lawrence and Rochester.

Heart failure in older breast cancer patients linked to medication

ScienceDaily (Nov. 14, 2012) ? Heart failure is a relatively common complication in older women with breast cancer, but the risk is even higher in those patients treated with adjuvant trastuzumab (Herceptin?), Yale School of Medicine researchers report in the current issue of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

The researchers conducted this study because older women who are at higher risk of decreased heart function were often excluded from randomized clinical trials of trastuzumab, which is used to treat breast tumors that over-express human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 (HER-2). Past clinical trials in younger, healthier women showed improved survival, but also increased heart complications linked to trastuzumab, especially when combined with a frequently used therapy called anthracycline chemotherapy.

"We observed an even higher risk of heart failure or cardiomyopathy after trastuzumab therapy than those in past clinical trials," said lead author Dr. Jersey Chen, assistant professor of cardiology at Yale University School of Medicine and a member of the Yale Cancer Outcomes, Public Policy, and Effectiveness Research (COPPER) Center at Yale.

The Yale COPPER team examined the association between the use of adjuvant trastuzumab and anthracycline therapy and heart failure and cardiomyopathy, the most serious cardiotoxic complications, in 45,536 female Medicare beneficiaries with early-stage breast cancer. The use of trastuzumab has increased over time from 2.6% of the women who received any adjuvant therapy in 2000 to 22.6% in 2007.

The team found that compared with patients who received no adjuvant chemotherapy or trastuzumab; use of trastuzumab was associated with a 14% higher adjusted incidence rate for heart failure or cardiomyopathy over three years. Patients who received both trastuzumab and anthracycline had a 23.8% higher rate, and those treated with anthracycline chemotherapy alone had a 2.1% higher rate of heart failure or cardiomyopathy events over three years.

"Further study is needed to fully understand the benefits and risks of trastuzamab when they are used in the real-world population," said Cary Gross, senior author of the study and director of the COPPER Center.

(AP) ? The rain has tapered off and floodwaters no longer claw at houses, but the situation across much of Haiti remained grim on Tuesday following an autumn of punishing rains that have killed scores of people and that threaten to cause even more hunger across the impoverished nation.

In places such as Croix-des-Missions, on the northeastern edge of the Haitian capital, the walls of dozens of homes along a pale brown river have been broken or ripped away, exposing clothes, bedding and everything else to the repeated downpours.

Heavy rains began falling in southern Haiti even before Hurricane Sandy passed just west of the country's southern peninsula the night of Oct. 24, dropping more than 20 inches of rain within a 24-hour period.

"It took away my whole home. Now I don't have anything," said Solange Calixte, a 56-year-old mother of two whose home in Croix-des-Missions was largely destroyed by floodwaters of the nearby Gray River.

One of 21,000 people the U.N. says were left homeless by Sandy, Calixte was forced to move with her belongings beneath a tarp at a neighbor's home.

And the rains have kept coming. Another front soaked much of the north late last week, causing more flooding and leaving at least a dozen dead.

So far the back-to-back storms have killed up to 66 people and the crisis is likely to worsen in coming months. Humanitarian workers anticipate a food shortage brought on by the massive flooding that destroyed yam and corn fields.

The United Nations says that as much as 90 percent of Haiti's current harvest season, much of it in the south, was lost in Sandy's floods, and the next harvest season won't begin until March. The World Food Program estimates that more than 1.5 million people are now at risk of malnutrition because they were either displaced or lost crops, forcing Haitians to rely heavily on more-expensive imports.

"This means massive inflation, hunger for a lot of people and acute malnutrition," said Johan Peleman, head of the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Haiti. "Basically, the cushion is gone."

Soaring food costs have rattled Haiti before. In 2008 a jump in prices sparked more than a week of deadly rioting and ended in the ouster of the prime minister and his Cabinet.

The U.N. and Haitian government are now launching an emergency appeal to raise $39 million in hopes of stemming what they foresee as Haiti's next humanitarian crisis. This money is supposed to help 1.2 million people by providing shelter and food, repairing water, sanitation systems and schools.

Calixte, who sells clothes on the street for a living, had seen flood waters seep into her concrete house before. It sits at the edge of a wide river that cuts through the northern side of Haiti's capital. But Sandy did more. The storm led the caramel-colored river to claw away at the banks, and it ripped apart the home she had lived in since 1999.

The river has since receded and people can safely walk across through the water.

But Calixte said life is anything but normal.

"I'm at the mercy of other people," she said, her eyes tearing up.

In the north, just outside Cap-Haitien, night-long rains from a cold front caused a river to burst its bank Thursday night. The U.N. base in town was flooded, but the real damage was at the edge of ravine where floodwaters swept away cinderblock homes and the people inside them. City Hall asked aid groups for body bags.

The rains pounded the northern coast of the country through the night. The bodies of five children and a woman in her 30s were found in a village on the outskirts of Cap-Haitien and laid out in a tight row the next day.

The country's civil protection office counted 10 dead that morning, and added two more several days later. But officials such as the mayor of Cap-Haitien believe the toll could rise now that floodwaters are receding to reveal bodies trapped in thrashed homes.

"Every few hours they will call you and say, 'We found a body and need you to come collect the body,'" Jean Cherenfant said. "That's the way it has been happening the past few days: The bodies keep surfacing."

The government and foreign aid groups have responded by handing out hot meals but humanitarian workers fear it may be hard to find food down the road.

For some, the search for food is already underway.

"I'm waiting for the government to help me," Calixte said. "If they don't, I have to go out and beg for food."

The GOP Civil War Is Now a Class War

Republicans warned that President Obama's reelection would bring about more class warfare, and it has, but not in the way they predicted: Elite conservative thought leaders are blaming the party's riffraff for the GOP's unhappy Election Day while the riffraff blames the conservative elite for not being conservative enough. No, you were not paranoid for thinking all that preelection talk about "Walmart moms" and "waitress moms" sounded a little condescending.

Writing at?Politico, Rep. Steve LaTourette?says poor Republican voters are suffering under false consciousness. No really, he says that. He says they've been brainwashed, like in?The Manchurian Candidate:?

Republican primary voters were conditioned by these ultra conservative special interest groups into believing the way that we could change a Washington crippled by partisanship was by nominating even more bitterly partisan candidates.

One problem the Republican Party faces is the conservative media cocoon, Politico's Jonathan Martin?reports. Sure, you expect the riffraff to be drawn to wild conspiracy theories -- Ron Paul's allies famously worked to win over the "rednecks," explaining the origin of his racist newsletters in the 1990s. But now some worry that those rank-and-file party members are rubbing off on the richer, smarter people. Martin writes:

The tension between the profit- and ratings-driven Right ? call them entertainment-based conservatives ? and conservatives focused on ideas (the thinkers) and winning (the operatives) has never been more evident.?

And the entertainers? power isn?t just with gullible grassroots activists who are likely to believe whatever nefarious rumor about Obama is forwarded to them in an e-mail chain ? it?s with donors, too.

Outside of Washington, New York, and state capitals, the big conservative givers are as likely to have read Ed Klein?s Obama book and seen Dinesh D?Souza?s documentary 2016, and generally parrot whatever they just heard on Fox News as the old lady stuffing envelopes at county GOP headquarters.

The riffraff are to blame for Romney doing something so foolish as embracing Donald Trump.?New York Times?conservative columnist Ross Douthat said of Trump, "It?s like a weird version of identity politics for people who like trash culture and reality TV." Both the Romney campaign and Trump's people saw it that way, too. BuzzFeed's McKay Coppins explained last week that Romney didn't disavow Trump, even as he kept up the birther stuff, because he was afraid of angering the Republican base. Why did the base love Trump? Coppins reports:

"He played very well with blue-collar-type Republicans, and the campaign saw that," said one source in Trump's camp. "If you have no education, and you work with your hands, you like him. It's like, 'Wow, if I was rich, that's how I would live!' The girls, the cars, the fancy suits. His ostentatiousness is appealing to them."

    Isn't that sweet? It's a rich person's idea of a poor person's idea of a rich person.

You think the No. 1 group that needed to get out of the media cocoon would be Republican pollsters -- the educated guys?paid real money to use real science to help the party win elections. Romney's campaign was confident the unskewed polls were correct, and that they'd win on Nov. 6. In July, Romney campaign spokesman?Lenny Alcivar loved the cocoon, saying,?"We no longer allow the mainstream media to define the political realities in America. The rise of Breitbart, Drudge and others, combined with an aggressive Romney campaign is a powerful tool in the arsenal of the conservative movement."

That being said, the GOP class war goes both ways. RedState's Erick Erickson writes that Republican consultants who forced Mitt Romney on Republican voters are now trying to blame those voters for his loss:

These people hated our ideas and values when we were winning and now choose this opportunity to sell us out the way they?ve always wanted. The conservative herd is headed off a cliff led by a consultant class that would otherwise now be swimming in pools full of dollar bills like Scrooge McDuck (right).

Iowa evangelical leader Bob Vander Plaats tells The?Des Moines Register that the problem was a nominee who was too much like Obama.?The Republican Party has long relied on a coalition of wealthy business people and social conservatives. That looks like it's fraying a little bit now that each side is looking to blame the other for Romney's loss. And some want out entirely. Focus on the Family head Jim Daly told McClatchy, "If the Christian message has been too wrapped around the axle of the Republican Party, then, A) that's our fault, and, B) we've got to rethink that."

Debt Consolidation And Types Of Bankruptcy ? How To Apply For ...

Choosing Between Bankruptcy And Debt Consolidation

When contemplating filing for bankruptcy, do not overlook the option of seeking a debt consolidation plan to pay off outstanding balances on the bills. Understand, there is a difference between debt consolidation and a consolidation loan, where debt consolidation can often remove late payment fees and penalties while providing a way of paying off the principal loans at a lower monthly payment.

Going through a loan consolidation loan specialist is also cheaper than bankruptcy procedures and your debts can be eliminated, while also stopping most creditor from harassing debtors for payments. They big difference is that with a Chapter 13 bankruptcy, the creditors have to accept the court?s repayment plan, where in a consolidation plan a lender can refuse to participate.

With debt consolidation, agreeable lenders will calculate the balance owed without most late payment and penalty charges, bringing the total down. Most are willing to do this to insure they receive the majority of debt from the debtor without having to have the court proceedings.

Most creditors also understand that once in Chapter 13 bankruptcy, it is a short step for the debtor to take into Chapter 7, and if the financial obligations become too much, the creditor may receive nothing for the amount that is owed.

Loan consolidation is a viable option to filing bankruptcy, a consolidation loan is not always the best route to take. First, not all creditors will erase the penalties and late fees and the length of the loan is probably going to make the total payoff considerably higher, depending on the loan amount and the interest rate.

Determining The Types Of Bankruptcy For The Individual

Persons overwhelmed by debt, for many reasons may consider filing for bankruptcy, but worry about their future credit report as well as assets they might have. Deciding to take the step into bankruptcy is not usually made lightly and determining if it is even necessary is not a decision to be made without expert help. There are several types of bankruptcy to choose from.

People with serious financial problems can usually arrange a meeting with a personal bankruptcy lawyer to first determine if bankruptcy is an option and then, which type of bankruptcy would be better for their situation, or most agreeable to the court. A Chapter 7 bankruptcy is typically field by persons with few assets and a lot of debt. Low income or unsteady income levels also typically accompany Chapter 7 bankruptcy filing.

Chapter 13 bankruptcy allows debtors to arrange through the court to pay their bills, and generally the folks will have several past due payments on car payments, mortgages and utility bills. While the debtor will be responsible for all regular payments according to their original agreement, past due payments will be paid through a payment plan approved by and administered by the court.

Chapter 7 bankruptcy also allows the court trustee to seize assets above the exempt amount and arrange for their sale with the proceeds going towards paying off the creditors prior to the remainder of the debt being discharged by the court. During Chapter 13 bankruptcy typically there are no assets to be liquidated as the past due payments and other bills can be placed into the payment plan administered by the court.

After helping thousands of clients and discharging millions of dollars in debt, the bankruptcy attorneys at Legal Helpers have the background to explain your alternatives and suggest a solution to your financial difficulties.

Highlights of 'fiscal cliff' taxes and cuts

The so-called fiscal cliff is an economy-rattling combination of expiring Bush- and Obama-era tax cuts and major across-the-board spending cuts to the Pentagon and domestic programs.

The cliff is the punishment for previous failures of a bitterly divided Congress and White House to deal with the government's spiraling debt or overhaul its unwieldy tax code. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that the austerity program would reduce the deficit by $503 billion through the end of next September ? or approaching $700 billion for the entire calendar year. CBO says millions of jobs could be lost.

    The fiscal cliff includes:

?The expiration of Bush-era tax cuts on income, investments, married couples and families with children and inheritances. In addition, some 26 million additional face the alternative minimum tax next filing season, which would raise their taxes by an average of $3,700. Cost through September: $330 billion.

?A $55 billion, 9 percent cut in the defense budget next year and another $55 billion in cuts to domestic programs, including a 2 percent cut to Medicare providers.

?The expiration of unemployment benefits for the long-term jobless. Cost: $26 billion.

?A sharp cut in reimbursements for doctors participating in Medicare. Cost: $11 billion.

?The expiration of Obama's temporary 2 percentage point cut in payroll taxes. Cost: $95 billion.

?A variety of smaller tax cuts for both businesses and individuals collectively known as tax "extenders." They include a tax credit for research and development and a deduction for sales taxes in states that don't have an income tax. Cost: about $65 billion.

?A need to increase the government's borrowing cap (the so-called debt limit) of $16.4 trillion. The government is expected to hit the cap late this year but the Treasury Department has the authority to juggle certain accounts to buy several more weeks of time so that Congress won't have to act until early next year.

Royal Mail Is Pulling Off A Turnaround - Business Insider

Royal Mail is set to unveil a sharp jump in profits this week, clearing the way for a sell-off of the business next year.

Officials and bankers working on the sale say Tuesday?s figures are the crucial test of whether the business will be ready for a float in the third quarter of next year, which could raise ?2bn, reports the Sunday Times.

The paper reports that the government has already sanctioned a roadshow of prospective investors after Christmas.

?That is the absolute key to the privatisation,? one banker involved in the process told the Sunday Times.

?If Royal Mail can show that the core business has turned the corner and has become attractive to private investors, we are on track for the sale.? Barclays is advising Royal Mail and UBS is assisting the government.

Royal Mail is one of Britain?s biggest employers. It has 159,000 staff and annual sales of ?9.5bn, half of which comes from delivering parcels.

The core postal business made an operating profit of ?23m, up from a loss of ?120m last year.

In the last reported financial year, the group?s parcels businesses accounted for 48pc or ?4.2bn of total revenues.

The demand for express delivery is growing, too - Royal Mail said the UK?s express parcels market is currently worth ?5.8bn a year.

Last month Royal Mail Group announced it was investing ?75m in Parcelforce Worldwide in a move it says will create 1,000 jobs and fuel a decisive shift away from delivering letters to servicing online retailers instead.

The delivery service, which is undergoing a radical modernisation effort, said the investment will fund a four-year expansion programme that will include opening new parcel processing centre in Chorley in Lancashire next summer and two new depots in Cornwall and Hampshire.

Moya Greene, chief executive, said: ?Our ?75m investment is part of Royal Mail Group?s strategy to grow its parcels businesses in the UK and overseas. Our strategy is to convert the rise in parcel volumes in to profitable growth. That means becoming a much more customer-focused company being run on commercial lines and investing in new, vital technology.?

For veterans, ?thanks? isn?t always comfortably received

By Bill Briggs, NBC News contributor

If the evening commute home from his Texas Army base includes a grocery-store stop, National Guard Staff Sgt. Scott Gilbreath will purposely change out of his camo so that, ironically, he can blend with other customers.

?My work clothes are the Army Combat Uniform so I stand out from the crowd in the very clothing designed to hide me,? Gilbreath said. ?Without fail, (inside the store) will be a well-meaning person ? sometimes a sweet grandmother or an older gentleman with his VFW hat on, or sometimes another young man ? who will stop and shake my hand and say ?thank you.? I get kind of choked up inside.?

He appreciates the warm words yet acknowledges they also give him an awkward sensation, as if the courtesy is a bit misplaced.?

?It is hard to pin down why we soldiers have the uncomfortable feeling when someone says ?thank you,? ? said Gilbreath, who has served more than 20 years in the Army. "Thank you? For doing the job that we were trained to do??

On the national holiday reserved to give veterans our most heartfelt and public appreciation, six current and former service members revealed to NBC News that hearing ?thank you for your service? routinely leaves them feeling uneasy. Their reasons vary.

One veteran called the comment ?off-putting.? Two more often wonder if the expression is just a politically correct, rote affirmation???no deeper than ?have a nice day????which, for them, can turn a forthright ?thank you? into a ?mild irritation,? they said. And a fourth veteran, Robert Sanders, who spent time in Afghanistan, says when complete strangers offer ex-military members some blanket gratitude for their service, it ?makes us squirm a little.?

Sanders used the word ?us? because veterans say this slight tinge of disquiet is a prevalent phenomenon throughout the U.S. military and much of the veteran community???a little-discussed fact of life that simply comes with wearing the uniform.

?I would say that it?s just me, but I've seen and heard the same sentiment from many others,? said Sanders, a former Air Force master sergeant. ?So maybe it's something in who we are or who the military makes us.?

Please don?t misunderstand, each of the six veterans say. They are sincerely grateful for your respect. But they?re also not sure how to respond. And many feel unsettled by the notion that thousands of their brothers and sisters???in Afghanistan, Iraq and wars before???made the supreme sacrifice. They deserve the ?thank yous? but aren?t here to accept them.

In contrast to those who didn't come home or who left body parts behind, many veterans and service members believe they haven?t done anything extraordinary to earn your individual admiration. They just completed (or are performing) their assigned tasks. They were compensated for the work. in return, some also got college educations plus federal health care and pensions. They?ve already received what they were due, what they were promised. No ?thank yous? are needed, some veterans say.?

?I?m no war hero. I did what I was asked to do, but nothing special,? said Sgt. First Class Ed Jarveaux. He began his Army career in 1999. He noticed that unsolicited, civilian expressions of gratitude emerged after the 9/11 attacks. He served in the Washington, D.C. area on Sept. 11, 2001 and now is an Army reservist.

?I volunteered. I didn?t do it for free,? Jarveaux said. Two years ago, after he entered a grocery store in Fairbanks, Alaska, to buy Thanksgiving provisions to cook dinner for some military buddies, a random woman spotted him and told the checkout clerk that she would pay for Jarveaux?s purchases. ?I thanked her. I?m fairy certain, though, that I was at a higher salary than the woman. This would be, maybe, why I felt a little guilty? about that gesture.?

?But it is definitely complex???why we feel this way. There are so many guys who had it a lot harder that me, who made more of a sacrifice. It feels a bit like that ?thank you? belongs to someone else,? Jarveaux said. ?I?ve made my peace with the fact that they can?t find the wounded warriors or the families of someone who died in service to offer that thank you. So it?s my responsibility to accept it graciously."

Spontaneous ?thank yous? still take Grant Moon by surprise???and he doesn?t startle easily, having spent parts of 2007 and 2008 in Baghdad during a 13-year career as a soldier and captain in the Army National Guard and Army Reserves.

?Fulfilling your duty is unlike a favor, which I think of as deserving a personal thank you,? Moon said. ?I always appreciate those that take the time to recognize our service, but I never expect it.?

In fact, through trial and error, some veterans have spent years crafting a proper, comfortable response. For Jarveaux, his standard reply has become: "Thank you for noticing." But, he added: "I don?t want it to be taken as sarcastically, in passing. It is sincere.?

Then again, the psychology of this larger unease seems fairly simple to diagnose. These are men and women who willingly sign up to be exhaustively taught and trained to become part of a vast collective, to think of the greater good and the larger mission, to work seamlessly and selflessly with the soldier, sailor, airman and Marine next to them. They see themselves as teammates, not as individual players.

Just listen to Sanders and you?ll hear some of that: ?I found it of surprising note the first time someone stopped me in the street and thanked me for my service. ?Even now, just thinking back on that, I feel a flush of being mildly uncomfortable. ?Not about the job or service, both of which I am very proud, but of being singled out like that. Very few (service members) stay long term for any reason beyond patriotism and a desire to be part of something important and bigger than ourselves.?

One of the few moments when many veterans feel fully relaxed with a ?thank you? is when someone with a shared experience offers those words.?

?Where I've seen it said with real power is among veterans themselves,? said Jim Henry, who served as a Navy surface warfare officer from 1979 to 1982. ?I attended a reunion of World War II-era veterans from the USS Enterprise recently???aptly nicknamed, ?America's Fightingest Ship of World War II.? They seemed to appreciate hearing, ?Thank you for your service,? but they seemed to appreciate it more from somebody else who served, no matter what era.??

And then there are those veterans who feel they should be sharing their own appreciation with us.

Mike Starich served seven years in the Marine Corps as an F-4 Phantom flight officer and as a recruiter. He separated at the rank of captain in 1992, acknowledging that his job brought him ?a few near misses (with death) ? actually more than a few.? He is another who admits ?it does make me a bit uncomfortable when folks do that.?

?My experience in the Marine Corps and Marine Aviation, the highs and lows, the dangers and the boredom, helped shape who I am today. I view the experience as a gift,? Starich said. ?In fact, after thinking this through a bit, I believe that it is more truthful to say that I owe the U.S. government and the American people the thanks.?

So should we be thanking veterans?

?I think people are doing fine. I think just saying ?thank you? is fine. I guess I wouldn?t want it to change at all,? Jarveaux said. ?

Starich, however, suggested some tweaks to the current phraseology of military gratitude.

To current active duty personnel: ?Welcome home. How can I help??

And to veterans long home from duty: ?I respect your service.?It is meaningful to me ...? Then explain why you feel that way, Starich said. ?This will help the veteran feel that it is sincere and honest, not just the politically correct thing to say.?

Official: Woman in Fla. received e-mails from Petraeus' mistress

WASHINGTON (AP) ? David Petraeus never shied away from the public eye before in times of crises. Now, he might not have a choice.

As details emerged about his extramarital affair with his biographer, Paula Broadwell, including a second woman who allegedly received threatening emails from the author, members of Congress said Sunday they want to know exactly when the now ex-CIA director and retired general popped up in the FBI inquiry, whether national security was compromised and why they weren't told sooner.

"We received no advanced notice. It was like a lightning bolt," said Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California, who heads the Senate Intelligence Committee.

A senior U.S. military official identified the second woman Jill Kelley, 37, who lives in Tampa, Fla., and serves as the State Department's liaison to the military's Joint Special Operations Command, where among other duties, secret drone missions are worked on.

The military official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to publicly discuss the investigation, said Kelley had received harassing emails from Broadwell, which led the FBI to examine her email account and eventually discover her relationship with Petraeus.

A friend of Kelley and Petraeus, who also spoke on condition of anonymity, also said the two saw each other often, but the nature of their friendship was unclear.

Petraeus resigned while lawmakers still had questions about the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. Consulate and CIA base in Benghazi, Libya, that killed four Americans, including U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens. Lawmakers said it's possible that Petraeus will still be asked to appear on Capitol Hill to testify about what he knew about the U.S. response to that incident.

Rep. Peter King, chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, said the circumstances of the FBI probe smacked of a cover-up by the White House.

"It seems this (the investigation) has been going on for several months and, yet, now it appears that they're saying that the FBI didn't realize until Election Day that General Petraeus was involved. It just doesn't add up," said King, R-N.Y.

Petraeus, 60, quit Friday after acknowledging an extramarital relationship. He has been married 38 years to Holly Petraeus, with whom he has two adult children, including a son who led an infantry platoon in Afghanistan as an Army lieutenant.

Broadwell, a 40-year-old graduate of the U.S. Military Academy and an Army Reserve officer, is married with two young sons.

Broadwell has not responded to multiple emails and phone messages. Attempts to reach Kelley were not immediately successful.

Petraeus' affair with Broadwell will be the subject of meetings Wednesday involving congressional intelligence committee leaders, FBI deputy director Sean Joyce and CIA deputy director Michael Morell.

Petraeus had been scheduled to appear before the committees on Thursday to testify on what the CIA knew and what the agency told the White House before, during and after the attack in Benghazi. Republicans and some Democrats have questioned the U.S. response and protection of diplomats stationed overseas.

Morell was expected to testify in place of Petraeus, and lawmakers said he should have the answers to their questions. But Feinstein and others didn't rule out the possibility that Congress will compel Petraeus to testify about Benghazi at a later date, even though he's relinquished his job.

"I don't see how in the world you can find out what happened in Benghazi before, during and after the attack if General Petraeus doesn't testify," said Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C.

Graham, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, wants to create a joint congressional committee to investigate the U.S. response to that attack.

Feinstein said she first learned of Petraeus' affair from the media late last week, and confirmed it in a phone call Friday with Petraeus. She eventually was briefed by the FBI and said so far there was no indication that national security was breached.

Still, Feinstein called the news "a heartbreak" for her personally and U.S. intelligence operations, and said she didn't understand why the FBI didn't give her a heads up as soon as Petraeus' name emerged in the investigation.

"We are very much able to keep things in a classified setting," she said. "At least if you know, you can begin to think and then to plan. And, of course, we have not had that opportunity."

The director of national intelligence, James Clapper, was told by the Justice Department of the Petraeus investigation at about 5 p.m. on Election Day, and then called Petraeus and urged him to resign, according to a senior U.S. intelligence official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the investigation publicly.

FBI officials say the committees weren't informed until Friday, one official said, because the matter started as a criminal investigation into harassing emails sent by Broadwell to another woman.

Concerned that the emails he exchanged with Broadwell raised the possibility of a security breach, the FBI brought the matter up with Petraeus directly, according to the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to publicly discuss the investigation.

Petraeus decided to quit, though he was breaking no laws by having an affair, officials said.

Feinstein said she has not been told the precise relationship between Petraeus and the woman who reported the harassing emails to the FBI.

Georgia Sen. Saxby Chambliss, the top Republican on the Senate intelligence committee, called Petraeus "a great leader" who did right by stepping down and still deserves the nation's gratitude. He also didn't rule out calling Petraeus to testify on Benghazi at some point.

"He's trying to put his life back together right now and that's what he needs to focus on," Chambliss said.

King appeared on CNN's "State of the Union." Feinstein was on "Fox News Sunday," Graham spoke on CBS' "Face the Nation," and Chambliss was interviewed on ABC's "This Week."

The Best Ways to Solve Your Short Term Finance ... - Logbook Loans

It?s nothing to be ashamed of ? unless we are incredibly lucky, at some point in our lives we?ll experience some kind of financial problems. These can strike at any moment, especially since the recession hit all of us only a few short years ago. If something vital breaks, such as your car or laptop, or an important birthday needs to be paid for, here are some alternative methods of borrowing money to solve your problems.

    Logbook Loans

A logbook loan is secured against a vehicle that you own, so the amount that you borrow will be against its value. As long as you are the registered owner of a vehicle (a bike, car or even a caravan) you can get a log book loan, as there are no credit checks. They are great if you need flexibility in your repayments, as these can be from a month to three years.

All you need is your V5 logbook. This is the paper work for your vehicle. The lender holds onto the logbook for your vehicle until you pay back the full amount. This makes it much better than pawning off your car, as you are still able to use it until you can pay back your loan.

    Credit Cards

Many parents have advised against their children getting credit cards, as they are known to lead to debt. But credit cards can in fact get you out of debt. When expensive periods come up, such as birthdays or Christmas, credit cards enable you to make large payments and pay back them back in small instalments. In most cases, as long as you pay back the agreed minimum amount, you won?t incur any interest charges.

Although credit cards can help to build up a credit rating, it means that you also have to aware of exactly how much you?re spending. Use it when you know that you can pay it back when you get cash in, otherwise you?ll gather interest in what you owe and cause more financial problems.

    Payday Loans

When you get a payday loan, you get the cash sent directly to your bank account. This can work out better than a credit card, as cash is accepted everywhere. Companies that offer payday loans are becoming more popular, now that they are needed. Therefore, there is lots of competition and plenty of rates to choose from. When you get a payday loan, it is usually owed back in a month, on your next payday (hence the name). These are great when you need to money by the next day and can afford to pay it off in the next few weeks.

The longer you leave the repayment of your loan, the more you have to pay back as payday loans have a considerably higher APR than other lending schemes. This can cause more money issues if you are not careful with your payments to the lender.

    Overdraft

If you have a student or graduate account, getting an overdraft can be a great way to help with your finances. They are usually interest free, so as long as you keep within the limits of what you can borrow, you can pay back the exact amount whenever you are able to.

If you?re not a student, don?t worry, as overdrafts can also help you. Although they won?t be interest free, they are a secure way to borrow money from your bank without having to know exactly how much you need to spend. The time limit is also flexible for which you need to pay it back, which means that you have more time to wait for a source of income to make your repayments.

Money problems are some of the scariest that we face in our lives, simply because we rely on money to live. Most of these problems can be short lived by nipping them in the bud. If you feel that finances are getting out of control, make a note of where your money is going and use one of these tools if needs be, or talk to your bank. There are plenty of services available to help.

Justin Bieber And Selena Gomez Call It Quits | Music News - Idolator

This isn?t the first time there have been rumors of trouble in teen paradise between Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez, pop?s royal couple (junior edition). But it appears the inevitable has happened. Justin Bieber is ?lingse? after all.

E! reports the couple?s split due to their ?crazy schedules,? according to ?a source.? Generally, we have to watch out for these anonymous ?sources? as bringers of legitimate news, but the evidence does indeed suggest that the Biebs, at least, may be moving on.

The ?Boyfriend? singer has been spotted out and about with Victoria?s Secret model Barbara Palvin, who tweeted a photo of herself with Justin at the fashion show where he performed, then joined him to see The Lion King on Broadway.

Barbara has denied on Twitter that there?s anything going on between the two, and that might very well be the case. But, guys, if you?re in a relationship, a word of advice: do not pal around with Victoria?s Secret models while your girlfriend is not present.

The fact that Justin is doing just that seems to indicate he and Selena are no more. Selena retweeted a pic of of Barbara and Justin with the caption ??.? that has since been deleted.

However, we await confirmation from the two stars themselves. E! has a pretty extensive breakdown of the couple?s recent tweets, should you care to read into this all a little further. People also confirms the story.

??Washington: NASA Selects American Small Businesses for Continuation of Innovative Research and Technology Projects

NASA has selected 39 small business proposals to enter into negotiations for Phase 2 contract awards through the agency's Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program. The SBIR program partners with small businesses to catalyze efforts to develop new technologies to support NASA's technology needs.

NASA will award contracts to 36 small high-technology firms in 17 states with a total value of approximately $27 million. These competitive, awards-based programs encourage United States small businesses to engage in federal research and development, and bring new technologies to the global marketplace.

"NASA's SBIR activities foster innovative approaches to technology development -- from concept to prototype to an eventual commercial product or service," said Michael Gazarik, director of the Space Technology Program at NASA Headquarters in Washington. "Phase 2 marks a major milestone for these projects; they've moved from the drawing board to the lab, solving tough technology problems that will enable NASA's future missions while bringing new, valuable products into our economy."

NASA's SBIR program enables businesses to explore new technologies and potentially profit from development of new commercial products and services. The program addresses specific technology gaps in agency missions and also strives to complement other NASA research investments. Program results have benefited many NASA efforts, including modern air traffic control systems, Earth-observing spacecraft, the International Space Station and the Mars rovers.

In addition to meeting NASA's needs, the Phase 2 proposals also provide innovative research in areas that have commercial applications. For example:

-- In support of NASA's aeronautics research, SBIR research will lead to the development of better software for verification and validation of flight-critical systems that will improve aviation safety. Selected research also will develop new cryo-cooling systems that could be used on future fuel-efficient airplanes powered by turboelectric motors. This technology also could be used for future alternative energy production using superconducting wind turbines.
-- As part of NASA's mission of scientific discovery, SBIR projects will develop new optical technology that can vastly improve our ability to detect extra-solar planets in the visible or near-infrared spectrum. These technologies will add innovation to America's multi-billion-dollar optical components industry.
-- To enable human exploration beyond Earth's orbit, NASA SBIR projects will explore new technologies for the next generation of radiation shielding materials needed to protect astronauts and spacecraft from the harmful effects of space radiation. These new radiation shielding materials could have Earth-bound applications as well, protecting first responders and our military from environments where harmful radiation might be present. New lightweight shielding also may dramatically reduce design and fabrication costs for nuclear medicine and radiation therapy applications.

The highly-competitive SBIR program is a three-phase award system. It provides qualified small businesses, including those owned by women and the disadvantaged, with opportunities to propose unique ideas that meet specific research and development needs of the federal government.

Phase 1 is a feasibility study to evaluate the scientific and technical merit of an idea. Awards are for up to six months. The selected Phase 2 projects will expand on the results of Phase 1 projects selected last year, with up to $700,000 to support research for up to two years. Phase 3 is for the commercialization of the results of Phase 2 and requires the use of private sector or non-SBIR federal funding.

Program participants submitted 246 Phase 2 proposals. Proposal selection criteria included technical merit and innovation, Phase 1 performance and results, value to NASA, commercial potential and company capabilities. NASA is making a limited number of new SBIR Phase 2 selections at this time, and expects to make a second round of Phase 2 awards in late spring of 2013, following passage of federal appropriations for the agency.

NASA's Ames Research Center at Moffett Field, Calif ., manages the SBIR program for the agency's Space Technology Program. NASA's 10 field centers manage individual projects.
