WV Raman: I'm surprised to see four openers in the side ? Cricket News Update
Bengal coach WV Raman has been surprised by the BCCI selectors? decision to include four openers in their squad for the first two Tests of the four-match series against England, starting in Ahmedabad on November 15.
In a meeting in Mumbai, on Monday, the new selection panel, headed by Sandeep Patil, named a 15-man squad for the Ahmedabad and Mumbai Tests. The squad includes two regular openers in Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir, as well as two reserve players for the opening slot, in Murali Vijay and Ajinkya Rahane.
The squad composition surprised the Bengal coach, WV Raman, who is not sure whether Rahane would vie with Vijay for the opening spot, if Sehwag misses out due to a finger injury, or he will be a back up for the middle order.
"I'm surprised to see four openers in the side. I'm not sure whether Ajinkya Rahane has been picked as a reserve middle-order batsman," Raman said during a media encounter, here in Kolkata on Monday.
Both Vijay and Rahane have been picked ahead of talented, in-form middle-order batsman Manoj Tiwary, who smashed an impressive 93 against the potent English attack in a three-day tour match, in Mumbai last week. Tiwary?s Bengal teammate Ashok Dinda, who was the leading wicket taker in last year?s domestic season, also failed to find a place in the squad of 15.
Former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly slammed the selectors for overlooking the Bengal duo for the opening two Tests, saying he would have picked both as a selector.
Raman, however, feels the omission of Dinda was justified as the home side would be looking to exploit the spin friendly tracks.
"In a likely scenario where India would be looking for turners, I don't see place for a fourth seamer," said the Bengal coach.
"It's a tough one but that's the way it is. You have to keep going and stay focussed," Raman said about Tiwary being ignored.
